Aiken, SC (12/08/2022) — Katie Chargualaf, an associate professor of nursing at the University of South Carolina Aiken (USC Aiken), was recently inducted into the Fellowship of the American Academy of Nursing.

Academy Fellows are nursing's most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice, and research.

Fellows are recognized for their extraordinary nursing careers. To be inducted, candidates must have conducted enduring, substantial, and sustained research that improves the health and well-being of people in communities.

Chargualaf's primary research is veteran health, and she has also conducted extensive research in post-organ transplantation care outcomes.

Induction to the fellowship has already opened opportunities for Chargualaf to expand her research efforts, and she wants to use this opportunity to pay it forward.

Chargualaf has been at USC Aiken for five years. During her time at the university, she has found an academic family and a position that supports her research.

She said that the unwavering support of Thayer McGahee, dean of USC Aiken's School of Nursing, and Daren Timmons, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, made her acceptance into the fellowship possible.

For those that hesitate to pursue their goals, she has some advice.

"Put yourself out there. If there is an opportunity, avail yourself of that opportunity. When others see something in you, believe them. We are often our own worst critics." said Chargualaf. "And when you encounter success, pay it forward."
