SC US House District 2 issued the following announcement on August 17.
Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) introduced the Hizballah in Latin America Accountability Act. This legislation addresses Iranian terrorist proxy Hizballah's criminal influence and networks throughout Latin America, threatening US national security.
I am grateful to introduce this bipartisan legislation with my colleague, Congressman Gonzalez. It is critical that Congress be made aware of the full scope of Hizballah's networks in Latin America and revenue generated through illegal drug trading activity, money laundering, and other destabilizing criminal activity on behalf of Iran,” Rep. Wilson said. “This common-sense legislation provides avenues for holding accountable the political leaders who are complicit in the destruction of communities and proliferation of violence across Latin America through their involvement with Hizballah. Additionally, this bill provides for improved data sharing capabilities between agencies to address the growing threats of trade-based money laundering.”
“I’m proud to join this bipartisan legislation to hold Hizballah accountable. Anyone associated with this group deserve the harshest sanctions and penalties under law. We must continue to engage with our partners and allies in Central and South America to ensure the strength and safety of the Western Hemisphere,” Rep. Gonzalez said.
