Edgefield County issued the following announcement on August 13.
Every ten years after the Census data is released Edgefield County reviews their population for each current district and the amount of population adjustments needed due to the new data. The State of South Carolina will complete a Benchmark Report for Edgefield County; this consists of maps showing the population adjustments for each district in order to achieve the one person one vote standard. This process will start this fall and the County Council must determine if there are any key issues or principals the State needs to understand prior to creating and presenting the first redistricting plan.
At the September meeting, Council is seeking input from the public concerning any key principals that may affect the redistricting or future elections. One of these issues may include whether, the County chairman should be chosen by the entire county. If the chairman is elected at large, council could have five districts and the chairman or add a sixth district for a total of a seven-member council.
All citizens are invited to provide comments or input at the Council’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday, September 7th. The meeting starts at 6 PM at the County Council building on Jeter Street.
