University of South Carolina-Aiken issued the following announcement on August 23.
Aiken, SC (08/23/2021) — University of South Carolina Aiken (UofSC Aiken) alum Keona Sanders was recently promoted to Vice Principal at Grovetown High School in Grovetown, Georgia.
Sanders graduated from UofSC Aiken in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. During her time as a Pacer, she was Miss UofSC Aiken, a 4-year member of the dance team, a chancellor's list and dean's list student, and a member of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She also worked in the chancellor's office and served as a Pacesetter. The Pacesetters are peer mentors who guide incoming students and help them move smoothly through their college experience and adjust to college life at UofSC Aiken.
Sanders received her master's degree in education administration from Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas in 2007 and is entering her 19th year in education. Prior to her recent promotion, she was an English teacher at Lakeside High School in Evans, Georgia. Before that, she spent three years in an administrative role as Oklahoma City Public School's Secondary Language Arts Coordinator. As the coordinator for the largest district in Oklahoma, she was responsible for building the English Language Arts curriculum and district assessments for the secondary teachers from grades 6-12.
"In my fifteen-plus years in education, I've learned that students want someone to see them. We as adults sometimes forget because we are in a leadership position and feel students should do as they're told. As I continue in this role, I strive to be an example and nurture those necessary relationships with students," Sanders said.
