Joe Wilson, a U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 2nd district since 2001, used his social media platform on August 19 and 20, 2025, to comment on U.S. foreign policy and ongoing international conflicts.

On August 19, Wilson posted support for former President Donald Trump’s approach to the war in Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He wrote: “Grateful to speak on @CNN @jaketapper in support of President Trump’s incredible work to hold war criminal Putin accountable and end the war responsibly. Putin says one thing then kills civilians. Trump will not be fooled or insulted. Trump will fix it! https://t.co/jiU47RLwHD”.

The following day, Wilson addressed historical and current proposals regarding Middle Eastern policy: “When then Senator Joe Biden proposed his plan to divide Iraq into three countries two decades ago I opposed it because it would have only caused three separate wars, empowered Iran, and given an opportunity to al-Qaeda. Today the same ridiculous idea is being proposed for Syria” (August 20).

Later that day, Wilson continued his criticism of Putin while expressing confidence in Trump’s diplomatic efforts: “War criminal Putin is a liar and known not to hold up his end of the bargain. If he now plays for time and insults President Trump, Congress is ready to provide the leverage needed to KEEP HIM AT THE TABLE. Our Peacemaker President is very close!! Secondary sanctions ready” (August 20).

Wilson has represented South Carolina’s 2nd District in Congress since succeeding Floyd Spence in 2001; prior to that, he served in the South Carolina Senate from 1985 until entering Congress. Born in Charleston in 1947 and currently residing in Springdale at age 75, Wilson holds degrees from Washington and Lee University (BA) and the University of South Carolina (JD).
