Joe Wilson, a member of the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 2nd district since 2001, recently shared reflections and updates from his travels in Syria and Lebanon on his social media account.
On August 25, 2025, Wilson wrote about his experiences with Syrians and referenced tensions with the Assad regime: “I have always been inspired by the Syrian people, those I met in the refugee camps as well as Syrian Americans I met as they advocated for a Free Syria. Assad’s regime declared me an enemy of the state. He is now in Moscow while I, by God’s grace, am in Damascus!”
The following day, August 26, Wilson described a diplomatic meeting in Lebanon: “Grateful to join @USAmbTurkiye Tom Barrack, @MorganOrtagus, @SenatorShaheen @LindseyGrahamSC in meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. There is a great opportunity for a stable and prosperous Lebanon in what is happening in the region and President Trump has made clear”.
Later that day, he expressed appreciation for religious leadership in Syria: “Grateful for the deep insights of @MorAphremII the Patriarch and Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church in Sayadnaya, Syria. The Syrian people are an inspiration. Make Syria Great Again”.
Wilson has served continuously in Congress since replacing Floyd Spence in 2001 after previously serving in the South Carolina Senate from 1985 to 2001. Born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1947 and currently residing in Springdale at age 75, Wilson holds degrees from Washington and Lee University (BA) and the University of South Carolina (JD).
