Joe Wilson, a U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 2nd district since 2001, posted several comments on his Twitter account on August 15, 2025, criticizing Russian officials and expressing support for former President Donald Trump.

In one post from August 15, Wilson wrote: “War criminal Putin lies

Trump will fix it”.

Later that day, Wilson addressed the appearance of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at an event in the United States: “Lavrov showing up in a USSR tshirt is not the boast he believes it is. Though his intention was to insult President Trump on soil, he reminds us all of the absolute failure and pathetic nature of the USSR. Thank God for freedom!”

In another tweet on August 15, Wilson described an incident as a significant affront to Trump: “Huge insult to TRUMP https://t.co/zLb0YTEmK0”.

Wilson has been a member of Congress since replacing Floyd Spence in 2001. Prior to his tenure in the House of Representatives, he served in the South Carolina Senate from 1985 to 2001. Born in Charleston in 1947 and currently residing in Springdale, Wilson holds degrees from Washington and Lee University (BA) and the University of South Carolina (JD).
