Joe Wilson, a U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 2nd district since 2001 and former member of the South Carolina Senate, has posted a series of statements on his Twitter account addressing international security concerns and commemorating historical events.

On December 4, 2025, Wilson criticized members of the United Nations General Assembly regarding the situation in Ukraine. He wrote, “The failure by 69 member states of the @UN General Assembly to call for the return of KIDNAPPED Ukrainian children, is despicable and pathetic. Using the same gruesome tactics practiced in Syria, War criminal Putin carpet bombs Ukrainian territory Russia illegally occupies,” referencing both alleged war crimes by Russian President Vladimir Putin and ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.

Two days later, on December 6, 2025, Wilson reflected on Ukraine’s decision to relinquish its nuclear arsenal following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He stated, “31 years ago, Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum, giving up the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal, in exchange for security and territorial guarantees. This naive agreement, brokered by the United States under Clinton, Russia, & United Kindom to placate Russia, removed deterrence”, referencing the historic agreement that sought to assure Ukraine’s sovereignty.

On December 7, 2025—the anniversary of Pearl Harbor—Wilson paid tribute to military service members: “On this day in 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked. Let us remember those who fought, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, in pursuit of freedom. I am grateful for their service and for the brave men and women in uniform who protect our nation every day.”

Wilson has represented South Carolina’s 2nd District since replacing Floyd Spence in Congress over two decades ago. Before joining Congress he served as a state senator from 1985 to 2001. Born in Charleston in 1947 and currently residing in Springdale at age 75, Wilson holds degrees from Washington and Lee University (BA) and earned his JD from the University of South Carolina.
